Rounding The Turn Buoy: Yes, it's that time of year again where Betty Kay Charters prepares our charter boats for high adventure, & fun ocean fishing! There is nothing better than leaving all cares behind and head out to ride the currents, and feel the winds out ocean fishing! We look forward to you having great catches of ocean rock fish, salmon, halibut, and tuna! There will be changes this year so let's share a little – Capt. Kathy will have another surgery to make her walk better and she will be out operating the Betty Kay as soon as she can.
We will start out ocean rock fishing March 1st, 2015. We will be allowed to catch up to 7 rock fish, plus 2 lingcod. Because the new NMFS (National Marine Fisheries Service) new stock assessment showed sustainable harvest down, there is a reduction in stock catch quota. Near shore sports men (inside 30 fathoms) now have to release copper rock, china rock and quillback rock fish. We are now only allowed to catch 3 blue rock fish of the 7 fish bag limit.... This will be challenging, and efforts should be made to change this for Oregon as those named fish in Oregon have healthy stocks.... If you want more information I would contact the PFMC (Pacific Fishery Management Council, the west coast division of NMFS who manages our near shore waters. I hope to have more contact information to you later. The ODF&W rock fish manager in New Port, Or., Lynn Mattis 541 867-4741 ext.237 can get you more information on this new regulation. Any more now, we have to “fight” for our rights to fish our natural resources which belong to all people of the United States!
Prime time for salmon will be July, August and the first part of September. We look for great salmon trips ahead and the season will probably open in April or May. Halibut fishing will start the 2nd or 3rd Thursday in May, going Thursday, Friday and Saturday for 9 to 12 days until the spring quota is met. Tuna, yes the thrills of off shore tuna fishing will happen for you mid July, August, September. We will be ready for great catches of the albacore tuna and high adventure for you ocean fishers!
We are thinking about starting the Free Fishing Trip contest again for those on facebook who “Like” our Betty Kay Charters facebook page or upload a picture from one of your fishing trips with us!.....to our Betty Kay Charters facebook page. What do you think?
Join us for fun and adventure on our trips! You will see the beautiful Oregon Coast line fishing near shore in 60' to 200' of water. Your fishing trip will take you over kelp pads, reefs and pinnacles which hold a rich habitat for the wide varieties of bottom fish you will catch! Often caught - BLUE ROCK FISH, BLACK ROCK FISH, CABAZONE, QUILL BACK, TIGER ROCK, YELLOW TAIL, VERMILION, CHINA ROCK, AND LING COD. You can catch up to 7 bottom fish plus 2 ling cod.
